Scientific Dialogue
Science Begins with Questions. Knowledge Grows Through Critical Inquiry.
Knowledge does not emerge from seeking answers alone. It also grows from a willingness to ask questions afresh, scrutinise assumptions and bring different perspectives into conversation. For MESH® RESEARCH, dialogue is therefore not an addition to research but part of the research process itself.
The Guiding Question
Central to our work is the question of the conditions under which professional competence can be described, structured and assessed on a sound basis. This question becomes more pressing as work, technology and qualification systems change. At the same time, competence models and frameworks are used in different countries to inform educational pathways, personnel decisions and questions concerning the recognition of professional qualifications.
This gives rise to fundamental questions:
- What makes a competence framework robust?
- What theoretical assumptions underpin it, and what empirical findings support its claims?
- What roles do subject expertise, methodological decisions and validation play?
- Under what conditions can competence frameworks be compared scientifically across languages, cultures and education systems, or transferred to other contexts?
- And what are the limits of what a competence framework can tell us about a person’s actual professional capability?
Different Perspectives. Shared Questions.
These questions cannot be answered from the standpoint of a single discipline. Contributions may come, for example, from:
- competence research, educational research and vocational education and training research;
- psychology and psychometrics;
- work and organisational research;
- research methodology;
- international comparative research.
These perspectives help challenge established assumptions and develop new research questions.
Reflective experience from professional practice can also raise relevant questions. It does not, however, replace theoretical justification or empirical examination.
For us, dialogue does not mean reaching consensus as quickly as possible. What matters is not whether positions agree but how well they are justified. We seek to make arguments transparent, take differences seriously and regard open questions as a starting point for further inquiry.
Scientific Competence Frameworks – An Open Research Approach
Through Scientific Competence Frameworks, MESH® RESEARCH pursues a conceptual approach to the scientific grounding, development, validation and responsible further development of competence frameworks.
Working Draft 1.0 is a working paper intended as a contribution to discussion. It raises questions, develops conceptual considerations and identifies areas requiring further clarification and research. It expressly does not claim the status of a fully validated methodology or a recognised standard. Critical feedback, alternative theoretical perspectives and methodological objections are therefore particularly welcome.
An Invitation to Exchange Ideas
We welcome dialogue with everyone interested in the foundations of professional competence and its description, both in German-speaking countries and internationally. Many forms of contribution are valuable: a reasoned comment, a critical question, a reference to relevant research or a perspective that has received too little attention so far.
Dialogue does not require agreement. It calls for a willingness to weigh arguments carefully, acknowledge uncertainty and distinguish assumptions, findings and conclusions. In this way, we hope not only to discuss answers together but also to improve the quality of our questions.
Progress often begins when supposed certainties are examined anew.
Your Perspective Is Welcome
We welcome well-founded comments, critical questions and references to relevant research.
Contributions in German or English are welcome.
